You Gave Me The Answer - What’s your favourite album artwork?

30.08.2021

They say not to judge a book by its cover, but have you ever judged an album by its artwork? Over here at PaulMcCartney.com, our favourite cover by Paul is McCartney III – an Ed Ruscha design and a number one record is something we’re very proud of! Some of our other favourite album covers include Phoebe Bridger’s Punisher, Grimes’ Visions and Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA.

Over and over again, we see questions from fans on social media about Paul’s album covers – whether they were released with The Beatles, Wings or as a solo artist. So, with the release of McCartney III Imagined last month, the timing felt right to finally put the question to Paul himself…

PaulMcCartney.com: Here is a question that comes up a lot on Instagram: of all the albums you’ve made, which one features your favourite album artwork?

Paul: As always, this kind of question is really difficult because I love them all! And all for different reasons.

Sgt Pepper comes to mind because it was a lot of fun putting it together: designing and having our costumes made at a tailor shop (at a theatrical costumer shop, actually!) and getting Peter Blake to stage the whole cover and so on. It was very collaborative, and we all had a say. So, I think for that reason maybe that’s a favourite. But I could just as easily say The White Album_, where there’s nothing on the cover, because that was great for the opposite reasons._

More recently, I love the McCartney III cover which was designed by Ed Ruscha and features a photo by my daughter Mary on the back.

Now, we couldn’t possibly ask Paul to pick his favourite album ever recorded (we imagine it would be like picking children!), but we have previously asked other questions about his creative process, such as his favourite recording studio stories or how he comes up with song titles.

Which of Paul’s album covers is your favourite? Let us know in the comments!
